We Forget
We forget- don’t we?
As they command the centre stage
And stumble through the script.
Strong and bold yet hollow; witless and wild eyed.
Prompted and prodded by politicians
Until the lines are learned
As they flick like film through history.
Illuminated by the limelight
By the strobe light of the fire
And one by one the millions fall.
But performance never changes
Though the lines might jump about
And the lights begin to fade
And the exit is stage left.
Where there’s no-one in the wings.
Blank now and empty
But the memories shift and grow.
And through it all, yes through it all
We forget-don’t we?
